"Hospital does not cater for a fat free diet"

About: Harmoni / NHS 111 St George's Hospital (Tooting) / Gastroenterology

(as the patient),

I called the 111 service after I woke up with terrible pain.

The woman who answered was friendly but I felt the whole experience was formulaic whereas when I used the previous service felt like I was speaking to someone professional who knew what they were talking about.

This operator called for an ambulance as she felt I should be seen in hospital. I was taken to the St George’s hospital in Tooting.

Although it was a difficult experience for me I received fantastic treatment having been admitted to an acute ward for a week. My wife wondered if I should be transferred to a surgical ward but the ward staff where I was must have thought I was better off where I was – the surgical staff came to see me on the acute ward. The surgical team explained the process to me, I knew what to expect and found this very reassuring.

The discharge process was very efficient, everything was prepared the day before so I was able to leave very promptly.

My only criticism (minor) is that the hospital does not cater for a fat free diet for people with gall bladder problems.

I am sorry that you found the NHS111 experience formulaic however it appears that the advice provided by the Health Advisor in NHS111 was appropriate in view of your admission to hospital. I am sorry that this caused you increased anxiety.

I hope that you are feeling better.

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your experience at St George’s Hospital. Your kind comments will be passed onto the acute team and your comments about the food will be passed onto the management team for estates and facilities. It is possible to provide food to suit any dietary need and we sorry that yours were not accommodated. Should you find yourself as an inpatient again and experience the same problem please do not hesitate to speak to the matron about this.
