"Acute Oncology Service"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Cancer Services

(as the patient),

My experience started in 2017 with prostate cancer, I had the 8 weeks of radiotherapy and was follow up by my oncologist. In 2019 an unrelated stomach cancer was diagnosed and I was admitted to Derriford for major surgery. Recovery took from the September to the end of November. Nurses from the Seamoor unit were always at the end of the phone if I had any problems or enquiries. My Oncologist eventually caught up with me and organised a Nuclear MRI scan, which revealed a tumour in my spine which was treated with medication.

In March 2021 I experienced discomfort so I made a phone call to the Seamoor unit and was called in immediately to NDDH. This led to being transferred to RDE for more tests and was given a one off maximun dose of Radiotherapy. The discomfort reappeared in September. Again, the Seamoor unit came to the rescue and arranged another blast.

This year in July, the discomfort came back with a vengeance causing tightness around the chest and instability from the wait downwards. This time the Seamoor unit, as always came to the rescue recalling me immediately to hospital and did a MRI scan. The conclusion was major surgery, an operation with a high risk factor which was an extremely difficult decision. I decided to go ahead and thankfully it was all satisfactory.

I owe many thanks to my Oncologist, Dr Varughese, Charlie and Jackie UGI CNS's, Gilly and Catherine Urology CNS's, Paul, Kelly and all the staff on the Seamoor unit who are always at the end of the phone which gives me a great sense of security.

Thank you to you all. You're a special kind of people.

Dear EMJAY,

I am so pleased that your experiences throughout the course of your diagnosis and treatment has been positive regardless of who you have had contact and support from.

I know that all the staff working in cancer services strive to ensure that patients receive the best care and support.

In the Acute Oncology service we are always looking for ways to improve patient care and ensure that oncological emergencies are treated quickly to improve symptoms for the patients.

I am very glad that everything has been managed smoothly and that you are better. We are always on the end of the phone if you have any further complications or questions.

I will pass on your thanks to everyone that you have named. We always appreciate feedback as it helps us to know what is being done well and what could be improved.
