"Lack of personal care"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Gastroenterology (Stomach and Gut)

(as a relative),

My mother was admitted as a emergency case and remained on ward 104 prior to investigations.  On admission she was advised that she would not receive any personal care beyond medication and monitoring.  This meant that the patient (in her nineties) was responsible for putting herself to bed and arising next day in a strange environment on a single room with no fellow patients to offer advice.  She was given the distinct impression that she shouldn’t ask for assistance as it would not be forthcoming should this be requested.  This proved the case when she pressed her buzzer several times to no avail.

The medical care was good but the personal care was unacceptable.

Dear Escrit

I am very sorry to hear that your mother has received such poor care and this is not the level of care that we support or tolerate in NHSG or W104.

Should you have any further information that can be more specific to the care your mother received, please email me direct on Lesley.gow@nhs.scot.

Otherwise, please be assured that myself and the ward manager will look into this further and we will share your experience with the team directly, to ensure this does not happen again.

Lesley.
