"Planned c-section"

About: Borders General Hospital / Maternity care Borders General Hospital / Theatres

(as a service user),

Booked in for a planned c-section due to low lying placenta. Midwives and consultants kept me informed of what would happen from the first scan of finding out it was low. I was booked in a week before due date. Midwife’s where very helpful and kept me reassured the morning of section once we arrived at 7am. They stayed with us the whole time making sure me and partner where both ok. All theatre staff were very professional and talked me through what was going to happen and what to expect which made us feel at ease. We went back to a labour room for recovery which was lovley to have time as a family and enjoy our new baby. Midwife kept checking we were all ok and offering refreshments. Once back at ward 15 again the staff where all very friendly and helpful.

Due to change in wards since covid the rooms weren't as spacious for storing personal belongings, all things had to be kept in bag as there was no units for storing them in and room felt abit crammed but no fault of the staff’s. All staff on shift helped everyway possible through my stay. One let down was our older son couldn’t come in and meet his brother or see his mummy due to hospital rules that no under 16s could visit. I think this could have a big impact on older siblings being away from parents as long and it did make me more determined to get home as soon as I could to be as a family the morning after my section. Overall thought we were very happy with the support from midwife’s while in hospital.

Dear scorecardrn37

Congratulations on the birth of your baby and thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback.

I am pleased you felt supported by all staff who cared for you, we aim to provide person centred care.

Within ward 16 we have a smaller environment as before and there are no lockers available for your belongings, however there is wardrobe and cot space to help with this.

We aim to provide person centred visiting and an individual risk assessment should be carried out to facilitate siblings attending. I will feed this back to the staff, if you would like to discuss this further please call me on 01896 826038 or email: kirsteen.guthrie@borders.scot.nhs.uk.

Thank you again for raising these issues as it help us improve our service.

Many Thanks

Kirsteen Guthrie
