"Discharged without informing family"

About: Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a relative),

My father arrived to the Accident and Emergency department by ambulance. He is known to suffer with diagnosed mental health issues, these issues sadly brought him to overdose as an attempt to commit suicide, stating the voices in his head were getting too much and was actively asking for help. We thought this would finally be the first step in him getting help. I explained everything to the doctor in A&E at the time, my phone number was given and I was advised I would be told of any updates.

The following day, I arrived at 12:00pm to be told that my father had been discharged an hour earlier with a bus pass to get home.

My father had nothing on him apart from the clothes on his back and slippers on his feet. He did not have the keys to his home, any way to contact family, any money on him or even a proper pair of shoes on his feet. Aware that he was mentally unstable and still in a state of wanting to commit suicide, I asked why the department thought this was acceptable just to be told that they are sorry.

Is this normal protocol from the NHS? I am appalled and disgusted at how my father has been abandoned in a time of need.
