Ambulance came quickly, the professionalism of the paramedics was reassuring, as they worked steadily to assess broken hip, give pain relief and organise transport down stairs and into ambulance to QEUH.
After not that long a staff member from the QEUH immediate assessment unit phoned to confirm the hip was broken and would require admission.
The next day anaesthetist phoned to inform that immediate hip surgery was required otherwise parent would be bedbound for life but that there were substantial risks due to heart problems. However he and his colleagues would seek cardiology input as to what could be done to reduce the risks and give best chance of parent getting through surgery.
We welcomed this straight talking and decisive action, while feeling like they would do their best - it worked and parent got through successful surgery to repair hip.
As a family we are very grateful for the efficient service to rescue parent and amazing skill in the successful surgical treatment at QEUH.
