I feel I need to share a conversation I heard as a patient at Glasgow Royal Infirmary last week. I was taken in by ambulance with severe vomiting and stomach pain to accident and emergency. In the assessment room I was told it was so busy and it would be a very long wait for a doctor, but the nurse made me more comfortable with some painkillers and a bed.
Hours later, I was taken to have a scan and during this time a nurse appeared. I heard her ask why X-rays were taking so long and her patient had been waiting 2 hours or longer. A member of staff said it was a porter issue. The nurse seemed to explain that they were really busy doing other jobs and she politely asked for some help from the X-ray department. The staff member declined, saying it’s not their fault.
I heard the nurse explain everyone was working flat out, the department wasn’t safe, there was lack of staff and patients would suffer if they didn’t work as a team. Again the staff member said no. I really felt for the nurse who was only trying to look out for her patients, she looked so deflated.
A few minutes later the same nurse appeared with one patient, then another and then another, and some people seemed to spring into action. Later when I got back to the accident and emergency dept, I could see the same nurse doing so many jobs and she even made the elderly lady beside me a cup of tea and told her her name, if she needed anything else.
Well I hope this message finds this nurse to say thank you! Thank you for sticking up for us despite the brick wall you faced. Thank you for being just amazing, you never stopped the whole time I was there and you deserve to be recognised.
"This outstanding nurse"
