In summer 2021 I was hospitalised for 7 weeks, initially thinking I had kidney problems. Dozens of tests later i discovered I had stage 4 lung cancer. At this stage I had also been fitted with 2 nephrostomy bags as my kidneys weren’t draining.
I was never a thin person but was very fit, always on the go & did a lot of walking up & down to my mums daily. I helped with gardening, shopping, housework etc and had a good social life, with regular trips etc before covid, so this was initially very restrictive.
Whilst in hospital with another infection in the New Year, Friends of Cancer asked if I would be interested in some keep fit sessions done online in my own living room.
Having completed the 10 week course I would recommend it to everyone regardless of age or ability. A lot is chair based and it aims to build strength in your arms & legs & open up the airways. It was very enjoyable and I soon felt able to go out walking more with my husband
Joe, who takes the course is very nice & down to earth. He then recommended a monthly walk, 5k my way for cancer sufferers, past & present with their friends & family. I’d recommend this to anyone considering joining. I’m unable to run with my lungs & tubes but enjoy walking round Ormeau Park. It’s a sense if achievement & with tea and cake afterwards, what's not to like?
If anyone is thinking of joining it please give it a go. I’m last every month but that doesn’t matter!!
