"My hospital stay after been knocked off my bike"

About: New Cross Hospital / Accident and emergency New Cross Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as a service user),

At the beginning of July I was involved on a road traffic accident, were I was knocked off my bike and I went under the wheels of the loaded car trailer the car was towing. Immediate first aid was carried out by a passer-by who applied pressure dressings and two tourniquet’s, the police arrived within 30 minutes and help stabilise me and check for any further injuries, before the ambulance arrived just over an hour after the accident.

I was transferred to the New Cross hospital at Wolverhampton and into A&E. The duty doctor Hannah was fantastic and had her team organised and scrubbing my wounds before giving me the all clear to go to X-ray. After X-ray I was transferred to an A&E room until there was a space available on the trauma and orthopaedics ward. During this stay I was visited by the surgeon who would be carrying out my operation the following day as he explained my injuries and what he would be doing.

I was transferred to the T&O (ward 25) during the night and made comfortable. The following morning I was operated on with no complications.

On return to the ward I carried on receiving the amazing and faultless  medical care. The staff in my bay on Ward 25 were the most hard working, caring and effective team I have ever witnessed. they provided everything i expected, needed and much more. I was in awe of their work ethics and professionalism, working with some very difficult patients and in some very testing conditions including the last hours of a dying man. Patient should have more respect for staff and they need a pay rise.

The NHS system may be broke but the people on the front line are beyond reproach.

A few names of my hero’s are, Staff Nurse Stacey, HCW Pam, Student Nurse Steph, Nurses Kay and HCW Sam. Plus all the others that worked over that weekend with me.
