"Postnatal care"

About: Maternity care (wards 68, 72 &73) / Maternity care (Ward 72) The Princess Royal Maternity Unit / Maternity care (wards 68, 72 &73)

(as the patient),

I had my daughter in PRM back in 2020. I was suffering very badly with PPD and the support I received was next to nil. Looking back this was a horrendous experience and I feel that my state of mind should have been picked up on. One midwife in particular was very rude and appeared as though she had no time for me when asking for help with breastfeeding and definitely did not appear to follow the NMC code. Mental health training and awareness for midwives is appalling. As standard there should be assessments around your mental health carried out prior to discharge after baby.

Dear Jh2022,

Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience after the birth of your daughter two years ago.

I am very disappointed to read that your postnatal care was well below the standard we aim for. As professionals we take the mental health of our women very seriously, and I apologise if we failed to recognise and respond to your needs.

If you are agreeable I would like the opportunity to discuss this further with you. This would enable us to learn, gain a better understanding and to improve our standards and quality of care.

I have enclosed both my direct contact number and email address, and would be keen to hear from you.

Best wishes,

Tracy Orr
