"Staff being noisy"

About: Paediatrics / Acorn Ward

(as a parent/guardian),

We arrived last night to acorn ward after (4 yr old with a head injury) being brought in by ambulance and into resus. The nurse was lovely, we got settled in the room and at 12 am they decided to move us.. to a ward (acorn ward) I was given a chair to sleep in. Then an extremely loud staff member made their way about the ward, crashing and banging about and shouting, I even heard another staff member asking them to tone it down.

My daughter should of had checks every hour due to a head injury. She only had one check in the night and not again until the early morning 4 hours later. Areound 5am the same loud staff member flew in and flung the windows open and was again crashing about the bed and equipment being very noisy.

I was far from amused after a sleepless night!! Was told Drs be would be round at 9am then it changed to 10am, and then 11am... nobody seems to know what they are supposed to be doing or who’s doing what. Shocking that parents go through hell and we are treated like that or have to deal with it, some respect goes a long way.

Dear Blackbirdyr38

My name is Dr Holly and I am one of the members of the Paediatric team whom review patients’ and family’s feedback about their stay with us.

Firstly, thank you for sharing your story. I very much appreciate the time you have taken to retell your experiences. I know this would have been difficult for you but sharing your experiences will help us improve our care significantly.

May I, on behalf of the Paediatric department, sincerely and deeply apologise for the difficult time you have experienced during your child’s admission. I am very saddened to hear you had not experienced the very best of care we aim to provide. Your child’s admission would have been extremely worrying and distressing for you, compounded by further distress in experiencing your child was not being cared for thoroughly, promptly and in a respectful manner. I very much hope your child is now better.

I wanted you to know that we take your feedback extremely seriously and your feedback has been escalated to our senior ward manager Caroline Jackson. We are currently in the process of exploring what has happened. We will communicate with everyone involved and make all the necessary changes to help prevent this happening again. We will keep you updated about what happened in more detail and the changes being made.

In the meantime, we would very much like to hear from you and we invite you to further discuss your experiences with us. If you do decide to talk to us please contact Caroline.Jackson@SomersetFT.nhs.uk, our Paediatric Ward Manager.

Again, thank you for your feedback and I am hugely sorry for your difficult stay with us.

Yours sincerely

Dr Holly Mincher

Dear Blackbirdyr38

I would like to up-date you on how we are improving our care in our Children’s unit following your feedback.

We have shared your story with all our staff colleagues and especially with the staff who were on during your admission. Your experience has helped us all to reflect upon the importance of general and specific noise across the chidlren’s unit. As a result, we have invested in a SoundEar for our Ward.

SoundEar is a visual noise meter, mounted on the wall. When there is too much noise it lights up immediately to serve as a reminder to reduce noise levels. This will serve to ensure the environment of our wards are as restful and peaceful as possible. I hugely appreciate the importance of this for patients and families when treating and recovering from illness.

Again, many thanks for taking the time in sharing your experience of your stay with us. We have learnt such a lot from your story. We are making changes with the aim to provide the best care for our patients and their families.

Your sincerely

Dr Holly
