"Care second to none, but hungry at the Royal"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Thoracic Surgery Victoria Hospital / Lung Cancer Services Victoria Hospital / Respiratory Medicine

(as the patient),

I had brought up blood and was sent for an X-ray by my doctor. Result: cancer in the right lung. I had nearly half of my lung removed. Terrified couldn't describe how I felt.

NHS and staff all there to support me and they did, magnificently.  Kindness and help. I was lucky my treatment has worked. Here l am, didn't need chemo or radiotherapy. I had a team of doctors and nurses, a big list of people who I had never met, yet they all helped me on my journey and got me through.

All my folks who helped me get through, this staff at the following: the Victoria Hospital Kirkcaldy, kind staff at NHS Tayside Ninewells Hospital, NHS Lothian Royal Infirmary.

Care was second to none. Staff were gems. Only one fault for me and it wasn't medical. The Royal Infirmary now I realise are primary health care.  But oh when you are in hospital, my mind went to what will I get to eat and when. Sadly Royal wasn't good portion size, starvation diet in my mind, I didn't get visitors so couldn't get food brought in. I had a tuck bag but that didn't last long. Food is the highlight of many a patient's dreams along with a cuppa and a biscuit or three. Now if it's the Victoria at suppertime you can have toast, toast and cheese 🧀 biscuits.

Sadly after tea time nothing till breakfast time next morning, a long haul when you are hungry at the Royal.

Before you leave hospital you need to be able to say your bowels have moved. Not on the amount of food I had! It took a lot of laxatives to get me out of there.

All the hospitals and staff were very good and caring. I can't fault them. A big thank you to all NHS staff. We all need you and appreciate you. Ignore the minor grumps, but I was hungry and raided the fridge when I got home.

NHS, I am glad we have you all, you still battle your way through tough times thank you. A foodie x

Dear Tizzyfluff

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with us via Care Opinion. I am so sorry to hear that you were diagnosed with cancer and had to have part of your lung removed. This must have been a very scary time for you. I am pleased to know that your treatment was successful and that the NHS were able to provide you with such fantastic support and care.

I would like to assure you that your feedback regarding the lack of food provided at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh will be passed on to the appropriate management team to review. I am really sorry that the portion sizes were too small, and that you weren’t given anything else to eat after teatime. Patient feedback is really helpful to identify areas that require improvement. Your comments are greatly appreciated.

I will also ensure that your kind words regarding the staff looking after you are shared appropriately.

Take care

Louise
