"Surgery on my knee didn’t go so well"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Orthopaedics

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I arrived over to Craigavon hospital around 6 at night, I didn’t come through the emergency department and got a bed straight away on the orthopedic ward. The staff on this ward have been totally brilliant, and the ward itself is very clean and my room gives me lots of space. I recently received surgery on my knee it didn’t go so well but I have had an apology for it. They didn’t close everything they needed to on the knee before they sent me back onto the ward and I lost a lot of blood and ended up having to get a blood transfusion. I was supposed to get out last Friday but I am still in here nearly a week later due to this problem. The food has been alright I have been eating it, but you can just tell it’s not freshly made food. The new visiting has been a bit of a problem because it doesn’t fit my family’s availability and my daughters would prefer to come over together which they aren’t allowed to do. The only improvement I think that would need to be made to my side room would be the window, as it doesn’t open and there is no fresh air in the room. It can get very stuffy and warm at night and can be very annoying as sometimes I can’t sleep due to the heat as it makes me very uncomfortable.

Hello

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on the ward.

I would like to thank you for your positive feedback regarding ward staff and I will pass this on to them to encourage them to working hard and maintain high standards.

I would like to apologize again for the issues concerning your wound healing, I know the surgeons are very specialized in their care and always want to manage wound bleeding and monitor this safely in a controlled environment on the ward, so we a are sorry for your delay in discharge.

Visiting restrictions are reviewed regularly and the trust is working hard to manage the risk to inpatients, we hope we can continue to reduce restrictions and get back to normal visiting in the near future.

We are very lucky to have a purpose built building for orthopedic patients, unfortunately the heating is controlled by the estates team and we work very hard daily to try and adjust temperatures to maintain a comfortable environment for both patients and staff,

We hope you are on the road to recovery.

Many Thanks, Stephanie
