I have recently been diagnosed with hip impingement syndrome. I realise now I may have had it for several years and didn't realise it so have been doing things which aggravated it e.g. sedimentary job sitting in a chair for hours, doing movements which aggravate it (e.g bending forward while leaning on my left hip).
After been diagnosed and treated by a chiropractor I researched ways I could make things better. This led me to hear about saddle chairs. Knowing about the Newton Abbot (Devon) Independent Living Centre (ILC) I decided to book an appointment to ask their advice, and specifically about seating options. I saw a very helpful OT, Nicola, who discussed and let me try out a saddle chair - but also other options such as perching stools which could suit my needs just as well. She mentioned beds/sleeping which was very astute, as I noticed my sleeping position is compromised by the hip issue. She demonstrated products to help which also included using my V-pillow to support my hips/legs remaining stable in sleep (which I have now tried and works very well).
She followed up my visit with a comprehensive report along with a comprehensive list of suppliers of equipment in the locality giving me plenty of options to purchase items I may wish to get. In addition they answered my supplementary question about gardening tools to reduce RSI (a painful occurence which happened since I made the ILC appointment) with suggestions in their report.
All in all, both in the face to face appointment and in the report I received friendly, expert, and comprehensive assistance. I feel very fortunate and grateful to live close to the Newton Abbot ILC and to received their professional and very personal assistance.
"Professional and very personal assistance."
