Our father was diagnosed with vascular dementia about two years ago. our initial contact with care services was via the Memory Loss doctor who explained in simple and direct language the journey we were all undertaking. whilst not pleasant it set the tone and framework for all that was about to happen.
Social services then carried out assessments and a support package was put in place to allow dad to stay at home for as long as possible. his needs were regularly assessed and changes to the care package and our input were altered to suit.
Integrated Day Services at Wishaw became more involved and dad joined them at Wishaw twice a week which he thoroughly enjoyed. as his condition deteriorated a social worker was assigned to develop the assessment that would eventually confirm the need for dad to go into a care home.
All of this was new to us, but all of the Wishaw personnel were excellent in taking time to explain the processes and procedures that had to be followed to ensure dad got the appropriate care and support. They were also cognisant of the support that we would benefit from and arrange for respite care and the two days at the IDS.
Throughout the whole duration we believe that open and frank discussions were held (by phone and at several meetings) where all parties were able to put across their point and consensus then achieved with everybody understanding why, how and when.
The three key ladies (Jackie, Sadie and Maria) were excellent throughout, showing great care, empathy, support and professionalism at all times. without them the last couple of years would have been much more difficult.
