I want to say a massive thanks to the staff at the Minor Injuries Unit at Hairmyres Hospital. In particular, a special mention goes to Suzy, who looked after me from start to finish.
As a key worker within the public sector, I know all too well how hard it is to provide a quality service in current times with budget and resource constraints, which have obviously been exacerbated with the pandemic.
I have to say, the service I received was first class!
At 50 years of age, I should’ve known better, but was persuaded by work colleagues to come out of retirement and play 5-a-side football.
Twenty minutes into the game, I went down injured and had to attend A&E.
After being triaged, I went to the Minor Injuries Unit. There, I was allocated to Suzy who quickly diagnosed that I had ruptured my Achilles’ tendon.
Suzy explained the plan of action in that an x-ray would be taken to ensure there were no other trauma and that my leg would be put into a cast. However, a blood test would be done first to ensure that I could receive medication to prevent DVT. We also went through a health-check to make sure that I was comfortable to identify and manage the risk of any side-effects this may cause.
With my leg now in a plaster and a set of crutches, we went over what would happen next, with Orthopaedics teed up to contact me , and we covered any questions I had.
Suzy was excellent throughout. She was very professional and is a credit to the team at the Minor Injuries Unit, Hairmyres.
I was in and out in just under 4 hours, which is amazing.
Thank you so much for looking after me.
