"My daughter has been left in agonising pain"

About: General practices in Lothian NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service) Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance St John's Hospital / Accident & Emergency St John's Hospital / Head and Neck

(as a relative),

My daughter has had stomach issues for the last 3 or 4 years. She was eventually put on the waiting list for a Laparoscopy in August last year. The last 3 days she has been absolutely doubled over in pain, pleading with me to get someone to help her. Her GP surgery just keep handing her medication which is not working.

She called NHS 24 and was advised that she did not need treatment and they did not arrange an out of hours appointment for her. She got to the stage where she ended up calling 999 as she was in so much pain. Doubled over, couldn't stand up, couldn't move, could no longer deal with the pain. She was advised that an ambulance would not be sent to her.

We took her to A & E and urine and blood samples were taken and she was advised everything was normal.  She pleaded with them to investigate further and was told no, she would have to wait on her Laparoscopy.  No scans, no x-rays, nothing. It seems blood and urine show everything that is needed.  If that is the case,  why do they have all these scanning machines and x-ray machines?

Her laparoscopy could be another 18 months away! She is in her first job and is at risk of losing it as she is having to take sick days more often than others. I'm absolutely disgusted at the lack of care for a young girl in extreme pain. She is still in extreme pain, she doesn't know the cause. Where does she start when diagnosing herself?! She has started to cut out certain foods however, if it is not this, she will continue to suffer in pain for potentially the next 18 months!

Dear ClaireG22

Thank you for your feedback. I am very sorry to read about the experience you have described when your daughter needed help. I can fully understand how worrying this must have been for her and also yourself.

Please may I kindly ask if you could get in touch with our team at sas.feedback@nhs.scot so we can look into this matter for you. What I would need is your daughter's name, address and date of when the call was made. Please may we also ask for your telephone number to allow us to call you back to discuss our findings with you.

I look forward to hearing from you

Kind Regards

Lesley

Dear Claire G22 thank you for your feedback, and I am very sorry to read about your daughters experience when trying to seek medical help. I can understand your worry and frustration at this time. Could I ask that you ask your daughter to make contact with myself and I will look into the details that you have described. I am keen to understand what has happened and would welcome the opportunity to explore this with your daughter's permission. Can I also suggest that if your daughter is still in pain that she re contacts her G.P. to get appropriate medication for her pain relief.

Kind regards

Agnes Ritchie
