"Urology Telephone appointment, left feeling deflated"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Cancer Services North Devon District Hospital / Urology

(as the patient),

I was recently diagnosed with cervical cancer and the PET scan picked up a blip on my kidney, I was advised it’s not being considered as cancer but obviously needs further investigation so was referred to the urology department by my consultant. Had both an ultrasound and a ct scan with dye then had telephone appointment made for just over 2 weeks later by which time I have started chemo.

I expected to receive answers on this call, having had over 2 weeks there would of been time for it to go to the mdt meeting and I believed I would be told if it required surgery or just surveillance.

What I got was a call from someone who had clearly not even seen my referral letter, seemed to have no knowledge of my oncologist or cancer, I had to tell them I had the ct scan with dye as they were telling me I would need that done,  told me I had cysts on my kidney which I already knew and I told them I had been advised they weren’t vascular as seen at my oncology mdt, but the staff member just kept saying no it’s urology, I felt like they clearly didn’t understand what I was talking about, I found them difficult to understand having waited for two weeks for answers and a plan I basically got a call that had no purpose or answers which given the current situation felt incredibly cruel, badly organised and stressful, completely wasted my time.

Dear Jaja2019

Thank you for leaving your feedback. I am so very sorry to read that you have been diagnosed with cervical cancer and subsequently a CT scan picked up a problem with your kidneys. I can also understand your frustrations and anxiety caused by your Urology appointment following which you felt no further forward with a diagnosis. I apologise completely that on this occasion the Urology department let you down and we will try to do better in the future. To this end, if you would like to contact me to give me your details ie name and NHS number I will endeavour to investigate further and ask the Consultant Urologist whose care you are under to make contact with you and try to resolve things to the best of my ability. If you would like, please contact me on 01271 314129 or email -paula.howells@nhs.net. Please also be assured that I will pass on your feedback to Mr Misra, our Lead Consultant Urologist, so that he is aware of your experience.

May I take this opportunity to apologise again that we have not given you the high standard of service that we strive to give to all our patients on this occasion and to wish you well for your continuing treatment at Barnstaple Hospital.

Kind regards

Paula
