"Airedale Hospital Day Surgery"

About: Airedale General Hospital / General surgery

(as a service user),

After almost a 2yr wait (understandable due to non urgent procedure & covid related issues) I was booked in to day surgery for a diagnostic laparoscopy. Attended a pre op assessment, answered many in depth questions about my health. Explained I had had some cardiac tests over the last few years which despite a small leaky valve issue the Cardio department had written to my GP with no cause for concern. As the assessment nurse could not see any of this on their files, I suggested they contact Cardio to check out all was well with my heart health. I attended for my operation 5 days later, met the anaesthetist who, after many of the same pre op questions and looking at my records said they would be very, very worried about anaesthetising me due to a heart problem (he showed me some paperwork) from my last cardio dept. scan. My operation was cancelled there & then after a 2 year wait. Why was this heart issue not picked up at the pre op as I specifically asked them to check? Why was I not informed by cardio of this apparently serious event in my health ? This total lack of organisation resulted in massive waste of  NHS time and money/resources and a missed opportunity for someone else who'd perhaps been waiting years for surgery to receive treatment in my place on the day.

This has caused huge distress to me after a long, stressful and painful wait for treatment and I left the hospital in tears, feeling sick and frankly angry....not at the team on the morning who were lovely but the lack of care/feedback/attention to important details pre op. I now also have the worry about a heart issue detailed in my records I was not aware of and more waits for treatment. I am a realist, (perfection does not exist in any organisation) I would have been understanding if my non urgent op had been cancelled on the day due to emergency/unforeseen staff problems.

This type of event should not be happening to any patient due to admin issues. I have contacted the Cardiology dept and PALS, left messages Answerphones and await responses.
