"Poor experience of treatment for a broken ankle."

About: Dorset County Hospital / Trauma and orthopaedics

(as the patient),

Poor pain management, I repeatedly said through the night it was not working.

Total lack of support for emotional wellbeing, I have a movement disorder, with that comes emotional distress. I was scared and upset. The morphine whilst it can't be helped, but should be recognised, didn't help with my emotional state.

Poor communication, I was not listened to or involved in decision making regards my care.

I left the ward in such pain and emotional distress, I dropped the bottle of morphine which smashed and I left important 28 day anti clotting course of medication on the ward, which I'm guessing is still there as the DN who came to administer it didn't have it. I don't even know where this DN came from. She arrived one day, I'd said I was unsure about having it anyway, she explained why I needed it, I agreed if she could get the hospital to send more I would have it, she left saying she would see about getting a prescription and I never heard from her again.

At the follow up discharge call on the day after discharge I was asked if I got home ok. I said I had, but didn't know how I would cope when when my son left in a few days.  The response was that the person knew how that felt from when they broke their leg.  I said that I live alone and am on crutches, and cant even carry a drink.  They responded that they could  remember how that feels, to take care and good bye.

Food

Food

Lack of gluten free food on day of admission. Eventually at 23:30 my supper arrived. It consisted of a packet of cornflakes and 3 small packets of biscuits. Apparently, that was all that was available. I had to really push to even get that.

I was admitted to the ward and told I would have an operation in the morning. The following morning I was told I did not need an operation. So my stay on the ward was pointless. Had a further opinion been sought the day I came into A&E after my x-rays, my experience would have been very different.

All stacks up to a rubbish experience.

I was told after a doctor had cut open the cast to check for swelling and that I would be having a new back slab before being discharged. After waiting about 6 hours to go down to the plaster room, I was told it would be bandaged instead. I told the nurse I was unhappy with this and she called the doctor to come and look at it. I told him my fears and that it didn't feel right. He prodded the plaster, said he would go and discuss it further with someone and would be back. Instead he sent the nurse to bandage it up. (This is my 5th time in a cast from previous injuries) A week on, I am in more pain than when I broke it.
