"Very very poor."

About: Royal Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as the patient),

I arrived in extreme pain to the ED AT 10:30pm. I asked how long the wait time was which I was told was 7 hours which wasn't ideal but I was prepared to wait as I was in chronic pain & needed to be seen.  7 hours passed and I still hadn't been seen.  I asked numerous times when I would be seen only to be ignored on one occasion.  I was told I was next on another occasion, which was untrue as here I am the next day at 8:30 am. I have been sent to a different department to be told I have to wait for my allocated time slot at 9:40am.

No communication, no apology, no compassion, no offer of even some water/refreshment. Very very poor.

Dear robinwy46,

My name is Linsey Sheerin, I am the Service Manager for Urgent and Emergency Care at Belfast Trust from the outset I wish to apologise for the delay in responding to you. I am saddened to read your poor experience, while this is by no means an excuse, the pandemic continues to impact the health and social care system, in terms of ongoing cases, increased complexity of patients and significant backlogs of care needs across services. This has had a disruptive knock-on effect on our ambulance service, emergency departments, availability of inpatient beds and access to timely care. It is with deepest regret that when you attended that the waiting times were longer than what we would wish them to be. I am sorry that you felt there was no communication, no apology, no compassion, no offer of even some water/refreshment. Your experience has been shared with staff to highlight the importance of communication and access to refreshments.

Linsey
