"Excellent Care"

Yesterday I finished a programme of radiotherapy at Derriford Hospital.

With only one exception, the radiotherapy staff were marvellous. They were professional, good-humoured and kind. They were also flexible and able to adapt to changing circumstances not of their own making. Thank you.

The exception was one individual who was disrespectful, uncaring and physically less than gentle (though I have no reason to doubt that person's technical competence). The chocolates are not for you!

But one out of many is not bad. Overall, the experience was much less stressful than it might have been without the excellent staff.

Dear Mr Jackson

I wish to thank you for bringing to my attention your unfortunate experience with a member of our radiotherapy staff. I would like to assure you these occurrences are very rare with the radiotherapy staff but we take matters of this type very seriously.

Please accept my apology on behalf of the department that the level of care from this individual fell below our usual high standard.

I am most grateful also for your sharing of your positive experiences with the other members of staff that were involved in your treatment. I will share your whole feedback with the staff group and use this as an experience the staff group can learn from.

While your negative experience was attributed to a single member of staff this is a matter that I would like to investigate further. In order to do this effectively it would be appreciated if you could provide further details especially around the individual and the disrespectful, uncaring and physically less than gentle comments so that I can address the behaviour described more fully with the individual concerned.

Once again I would like to offer my sincere apologies regarding this matter and be reassured I will investigate the behaviours described.
