"Lung cancer"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / Respiratory Medicine Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Thoracic Surgery Victoria Hospital / Lung Cancer Services

(as the patient),

Went to GP about a sore hip but also mentioned I had a funny rash on my shoulder.

After he examined my shoulder he was concerned that he had found a lump in my lymph nodes. He took bloods and sent me for a chest x-ray. The x-ray showed something in my lung that hadn’t been there at previous x-ray a few years ago.

I feel so grateful to my GP for being diligent in his care. He also phoned me for updates.

I found out around a month later after scans and biopsy that I had lung cancer. The staff at all stages of this diagnosis were excellent.

I then saw a surgeon in Edinburgh where the decision was to remove a quarter of my lung. I had this operation a month ago.

Throughout all of the tests and after my op, my nurse practitioner was excellent. He kept me informed at all stages what would happen next. He has now told me I will need more treatment and gave me my appointment time.

Thank you for sharing your experience on receiving cancer treatment. We really value your feedback. I can only imagine how difficult it must be to go through your surgical treatment and then be told you required further treatment.

I can see from your post that there was a regional approach to your care so it is particularly wonderful to hear how all the staff made you feel safe and secure. I am pleased that we were able to support you.

I do hope your health is improving following your surgery.

Warm wishes

Ed Cairns

Thank you for the feedback about your GP. It is extremely valuable and I would like to share it with your GP if you have no objection to this. If you could email me at joyce.kelly@nhs.scot with your practice details, I will pass on your comments. Many thanks.
