"Long wait for discharge prescription"

About: Forth Valley Royal Hospital / Day Surgery

(as the patient),

I attended day surgery recently for a total hip replacement surgery procedure. The operation and aftercare was satisfactory and was very pleased with the care I received in the ward and theatre.

I was passed fit to go home on the Friday, with slightly low blood pressure, but agreed with the nursing staff that it would be prudent to stay until Saturday morning.

Saturday morning, around 09:00hrs, I was informed that I was able to go home and the pharmacy would get my prescription to me to take home with me. The staff nurse informed me that the pharmacy did not open until 10:30hrs on a Saturday and that it should only take around two hours. I waited and waited to the embarrassment of the nursing staff and my prescription arrived at 5pm. A six and a half hour wait in the ward.

To cap it all, I assume no porters were available as the poor staff nurse had to wheel me, in a wheelchair, down to the car pick up point which seems such a shame as she appeared to be run off her feet in the ward. Must try harder I am afraid and the pharmacy department is singled out for my anger.

Dear Grizz

Thank you for taking the time to post about your recent experience in Day Surgery, I do apologise for your long wait on discharge medication unfortunately there is reduced staffing numbers at the weekend within pharmacy, but this is something we are looking into to try and resolve helping streamline discharges.

I wish you well in your recovery

kind regards

Mandy Clark

Update posted by Grizz (the patient)

Hi Mandy,

Sorry to be so late in responding, unfortunately I developed complication, non related, after my hip surgery discharge.

Unfortunately the, reduced staffing at weekends in phamacy, does not hold as on the previous day (Friday) patients in my ward had to wait 5/6 hours for their meds.

mmmmm.
