"The nurses treated me like a princess"

About: Daisy Hill Hospital / Elective Overnight Stay Centre/Gynaecology Ward Daisy Hill Hospital / Emergency Department Northern Ireland Ambulance Service / Emergency ambulance response

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I came in to Daisy Hill in an ambulance, due to severe back pain and exhaustion. The only criticism I would have would be the waiting time for the ambulance but the paramedics who brought me in were absolutely lovely.

When I arrived in the ED I was worried as I have had previous bad experiences in the department, however they have greatly improved since then. I had a room all to myself and it was so lovely and bright. This really helped me as I had also been feeling quite down. The nurses in the ED treated me like a Princess, and that is the only way I can explain how I felt.

When I was moved up to the surgical ward I was really happy with my lovely wee side room all to myself. Once again it was well lit and very bright which I appreciated, what I also really liked about the side room was that I could just be myself…if I needed to cry I was able to do so in private. Yesterday I was moved onto this more general ward, and it has also been exemplary the only thing is, that you definitely notice the noise increase, so that’s a bit different.

The nurses have been brilliant, everything has been 100% from the word go. They have been amazing at explaining everything to me over my time here, the nurse who comes around with medication especially, she always makes sure to explain what medication she gives me.

The food is the best food I have had in any hospital ever, and it is a huge improvement on how it was the last time I was here.

My only criticism is that I feel that the doctors can be condescending when speaking to you, and this really irks me. There have also been instances where one doctor says one thing and another will say a completely different thing and this just confuses me.

Dear Fioew57

Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience with us. I am sincerely sorry for the delay in the ambulance response time. In order to improve our response times, we are working closely with the Department of Health to increase our available resources. We are also working with local EDs to try to ensure that our patients are handed over to hospital clinical teams as quickly as possible so that ambulances are able to respond to further emergencies.

It was reassuring to also hear about the professionalism and level of care provided by the paramedics and the staff in Daisy Hill Hospital.

I wish you the best with your recovery.

Best wishes

Neil

Dear Fioew57,

Thank you for taking the time to give feedback on Care Opinion. I am so glad you received nursing care that was considerate and kind. I will make sure that the nursing staff of Female Surgical are made aware of your kind comments. I am sorry to read that you did not feel that the medical team communicated well with you. I will ensure that our Deputy Medical Director is informed of this and it can be raised at the daily medical handover.

Thank you again,

Regards

Josephine Matthews
