"Radiology at Ulster Hospital"

About: The Ulster Hospital / Radiology

(as a service user),

Yesterday I had steroid injections in the fluoroscopy department and the service I received was excellent. I did not have to wait too long for the appointment and on arrival at the hospital was seen by a very pleasant member of the reception team. I was called right on my appointment time and once in the treatment room was made to feel relaxed and well looked after by the staff there. All were cheerful, pleasant, reassuring and knowledgeable and I felt confident that they had my best interests at heart. The treatment went smoothly and up to now I’ve had no problems. Hopefully my quality of life will improve as the treatment begins to take effect.

The reason I am contacting you is to do with the instructions that were sent to me with my appointment letter.  In the paragraph under the heading ‘Important information for all patients with a uterus (womb) aged 11-55’ why have you deleted the word ‘woman’? I found this to be very offensive. This makes me feel like we are part of a group who are marginalised and who are being discriminated against and seemingly our feelings are ignored. I feel that this is shameful and wonder where my feelings sit in your SET equality action plan.

I look forward to hearing from the trust in the near future.

Hi StandUPforwomen

Thank you for sharing your story.

I am glad to hear that you had a good experience at fluoroscopy department.

I have raised your point regarding the absence of the word "woman / women" from documentation to service and equality leadership.

As I think of reasons for this, I am thinking of women who have had uterus removed and those who are now women following gender reassignment being possible factors. However, rather than speculate, I will respond to you with service leadership and equality leadership advice.

I appreciate how appropriate wording / language is so important in order to properly recognise and respect women - and - indeed - every individual.

I apologise to you that this Trust documentation would make you or any woman feel marginalised, discriminated against or ignored.

I will feed back to you with leadership response.

Best regards

Conor
