I received a letter with date and time of my surgery at Branston ward, Lincoln County Hospital. My letter stated to be at the ward at a time in the morning, however when I arrived to check in, the nurse checked the board and I was down for a PM surgery. I was told I could drink water up to 11.00 (I had stopped in the early morning, as per my letter) but it was now too late for me to have anything to eat. I was taken down for surgery in the afternoon. After changing into the gown, I went into the theatre, where 2 of the anaesthetist nurses attempted to put the canula in my left hand. After a good 5 minutes and a considerable amount of pain from prodding around, they gave up and had to use my right hand. I was left with a huge, swollen bruise and soreness in my left hand, which is still there almost 2 weeks later. I was taken back to the ward about 2.5 hours later, transferred into bed and then didn't see anyone until I got up to go to the nurses station (another 2 hours after this), to see if I could have a cup of tea and something to eat (it had been 26hrs since I last ate). The nurse said someone should have been to offer me something to eat once back on the ward (no one did). I also had to ask to have the canula removed so I could go home, and again the nurse said that I have to be back from surgery for 2hrs and have eaten before I could leave, which I had, but no one seemed to know this.
I am very disappointed at the organisation and care given. Going into hospital for surgery is stressful enough, particularly at the moment when we can't have someone with us. The fact that I had to spend all day on the ward, unnecessarily because the time of my surgery was wrong, to then not be checked on afterwards, makes the whole ordeal quite upsetting.
