"Was told I'd have to go private"

About: Fife Community Services / Podiatry

(as a service user),

I recently had 2 refer myself 2 fife podiatry service as I'm type1 diabetic, the last time i got a phone call durin pandemic asking if i needed 2 c them at that time i didn't but was told in future if i did I'd have to ask my GP to refer, this did not happen as was told I had to refer myself, I did that got form sent out only to discover with utter disbelieve it said NHS podiatrists in fife no longer cut nails, which was why I wanted them in 1st place. so i phoned and was told i'd have to get private.

I've also got neuropathy in my legs so asked bout that as its a yearly check but i wasn't on list, they asked how bad it was I said moderate 2 high, ur only allowed to pick one option they said so i said moderate , was told I was put on a list but wasnt told when id be seen. Wot do podiatrists actually do if not cuttin nails for one. Not every1 can afford to go private.

Please accept my sincere apologies for the delay in responding to your comment.

I am sorry to read about your experience when you contacted the podiatry service.

Although it has been several years since podiatry provided personal nail care you should have been given the opportunity to be assessed and offered advice about how to manage your own nails safely, or to show a family member how to do this for you or how to get help from the voluntary service. You should not have been advised to go privately and I will ensure all podiatrists stop offering this as an option

The diabetes foot screening programme has been changed Scotland wide and it is hoped that in Fife we will have the service running for moderate and high risk patients over the next couple of months.

I would like the opportunity to discuss the issues you highlighted with you further and I would therefore invite you to contact my secretary on 01592 645285 to arrange a time suitable for both of us to discuss.
