I was admitted to Glasgow Royal Infirmary in mid March for major surgery, having been diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer which had spread. The prognosis then was not great.
After 6 rounds of chemotherapy the surgeons were finally willing to have a conversation and they decided they would operate although couldn’t completely say what they would be able achieve as they wouldn’t know until they went in.
Worst case scenario would have left me with a temporary stoma and also the removal of my gall bladder and possibly a little of my liver. The surgery was more successful than hoped.
My recovery has been plagued a little with infection but they have worked incredibly quickly and efficiently to find the source and they are now hopefully dealing with it.
Every single member of staff I have met have been fantastic. From the ward cleaners to the consultants.
Explanations have been very clear and care has been exceptional. Nothing is ever a problem however there is quiet encouragement to push ourselves when me might not quite feel like it. For example, having a shower.
The only area I feel could be improved significantly is the dietary side of things. The meals are to be honest, quite grim.
When nurturing people back to health, I don’t believe there are the right nutrients in the food served. However I do recognise that serving the numbers involved three meals a day in huge spread out buildings is an almost impossible task but it would be good to look at this aspect of the care system.
"Every single member of staff I have met have been fantastic."
