"Grateful for the care, attention and expertise of the staff"

About: Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Critical Care Altnagelvin Area Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

After being admitted to Altnagelvin in early labour at 21 weeks I had to have an emergency section. Unfortunately our little angel didn't make it but the support we received from Melissa, the bereavement midwife was amazing.

I then developed Sepsis and spent almost 4 months in Altnagelvin between HDU, ICU and the Gynecology ward. The consultants, theatre staff, nursing staff, tissue viability team, trainee nurses, physiotherapy team and auxiliary staff were amazing; the treatment I received was second to none.
I've been told it was touch and go on numerous occasions as my body wasn't responding well, however after a multitude of antibiotics, dialysis, blood transfusions and the input from the best team of consultants I was finally well enough to come home. The aftercare from tissue viability was incredible, this was required for an additional 5 months and I even nicknamed the lead nurse 'The Queen of Pain'.
In the words of one of the nurses in the gynecology ward, I became part of the furniture. Everyone knew who and I was and what I'd been through, one of the team decorated the whiteboard in the ward when I was released from ICU back into the ward. The staff treated my family like royalty and made the experience as bearable as possible, with Stephanie even painting my nails for me in ICU.
This experience will stay with me forever, but everyday I am grateful for the care, attention and expertise of the staff within the many departments in Altnagelvin who cared for me, without this it may have been a very different outcome.

encourage people to share their experiences of health and social care, what matters to you, what you particularly liked or disliked so that we can share with the relevant department, and staff .

Hello May1484

My name is Vi Gray Patient & Client Experience for the Trust.

Thank you for sharing your experience, which must have been very difficult time for you and also having to go through the loss of your little angel. Yet despite what you been through you took the time to express your gratitude for the "care attention and expertise" you encountered from various departments and staff you encountered during your hospital stay. I wanted to let you know that this has been shared with the specific areas mentioned HDU/ICU/ Gynaecology and Tissue Viability

I have been asked to post this response to you from the Tissue Viability Lead Nurse

On behalf of my staff thank you for the very positive comment on the care you received from the team. We often discussed your wound deciding as to the most appropriate plan of action at different stages. We also learnt from this very challenging experience as well as developing a very positive therapeutic relationship with you. Please take care

Heather Ogle
