About: Maternity care / Maternity Maternity care / Theatre

(as the patient),

I went to the Royal Maternity Unit with my 2nd child, I was already 11 days overdue so I was induced my midwife was a lovely woman who was retired(I wish I remember her name) but was brought in due to staff shortages, things started fine I was getting contractions and my midwife was very encouraging throughout, but my babies heart rate was dropping with each contraction so my midwife checked me and it was a cord prolapse, I had to get rushed to theatre for an Emergency C section for the wellbeing of my baby and me I was so scared but my midwife kept hold of the cord, she kept reassuring me and made sure the cord wasn't going any further to harm my baby she did this right up until I got put to sleep. For this I am truely thankful I believe she help to save my baby and I'm so thankful, thank you so much. I just remember waking up and there was my baby boy I'm was so overjoyed. Superheroes don't always wear capes ❤️

Dear Niamhd

My name is Stephanie Wilson and I am a sister on Delivery Suite RJMS.

Thank you so much for taking time to share your story. This must have been such a terrifying experience for you. Cord prolapse is a real emergency and frequently there is little time for explanation. However I am delighted that you found your midwife a reassuring presence and felt supported right up to the point of being put to sleep. We have a few retired colleagues who continue to work and share their vast experience with us, I will share your story and hopefully identify who cared for you, I know any midwife will be delighted to hear of such a happy outcome.

I do hope you are recovering well from your surgery and that your little boy continues to thrive.

Every best wish to you and your family

Stephanie
