"Cervical Cancer Screening"

About: The Moss Practice

(as a service user),

I went for my first screening, something I had put off for a short while but knew the importance so made my appointment.  I wasn’t too worried about the appointment.  During the screening the nurse could not complete the exam but nothing was explained to me and why it could not be done. I was simply told I had to make another appointment with the GP and if that didn’t work I had to go to hospital.  I was visibly upset and had a number of questions but felt dismissed and I felt the nurse showed no empathy.  All I wanted was a 30 second conversation about the reasons it was not successful and what exactly the GP/Hospital would do differently. I came out if my appointment upset, and due to my experience I am questioning whether to go back for another screening.  After doing some research online, I don't think I’m  alone in my experience - many women put this screening off and if they then receive poor experiences it reduces the chances of them being screened again.

Dear Alex, cervical cancer screening is really important and it does reduce the incidence of cervical cancer in this country. As such I am really sorry that you have had a negative experience. Having a cervical smear it is not a particularly nice thing to have done but plainly the explanation as to what went wrong was not adequate. I will be grateful if you give me a ring at some point so that I can find out more
