"Insensitive comments"

About: Stoke Mandeville Hospital / Accident and emergency Stoke Mandeville Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

I was only 5 weeks pregnant but in that short time of knowing, the excitement and happiness of finding out you're going to be a mother is still the same, no matter if you make it to full term or not. I had symptoms already and had shared this joy with my  husband and immediate family. Sadly, my pregnancy didn't last and I had some severe abdominal pains as part of it. I went to A&E and the nurse I spoke to first who was making sure I was going to the right person was lovely. As was the doctor who examined me. Both very professional and compassionate. The doctor was concerned I could have an ectopic pregnancy so booked me in for a scan with the early pregnancy team.

I went there in the morning and from the get go it just felt unprofessional. When I arrived I was asked to take a urine sample which I did. The nurse then pulled me aside in the corridor - didn't take me to a room, and said my pregnancy test was negative, and asked when I last got a positive pregnancy test. I said 2 days ago. They then said I shouldn't be taking a pregnancy test any earlier than when 2 weeks late for a period. I felt as though I'd been told off. I explained I was very regular and was 4 days late. They continued with critizing the brand of pregnancy tests I used, saying they are too sensitive and that really this is just like a late period. It was an awful experience for me. I had personal questions I wanted to ask but was not comfortable in the corridor or with this nurse. I was shocked at how insensitive she was and how I was made to feel as I had done something wrong and that I was never really pregnant. I really hope something will be done to ensure that all staff are treating patients with dignity and compassion, especially with such sensitive conditions.
