"Breastfeeding struggles"

About: Queen Margaret Hospital / Maternity care

(as a service user),

I was discharged from hospital  hours after an emergency c section. While in hospital my little girl had been latching on well and was able to take. However once home I started to struggle, my little girl was getting frustrated as could not latch together. The day after I was discharged I received a missed call and a voicemail from the breastfeeding support workers asking how our first night at home was, I found this so reassuring that help was there and that simple call made my day. I had phoned back and left a message, behold to me that night ended up being a very difficult night my little girl was cluster feeding and each time I was trying to feed her I was in complete Agony every feed was so so painful I was in tears but I had to feed my baby. I know I was expecting a call between 9-10 that morning by the breast support worker so I tired to hold on. I was so close that morning to getting my partner to go and get formula as I just couldn’t keep going without being in pain and getting myself in a state.

Lucky the best support worker Collette called asked how I was and I told her I am struggling had no sleep and in so much pain within 2 hours Collette was in my house reassuring me that all was ok, she taught me how to feed in a different position, as my breast had trauma from wrong latches she recommended a nipple shield to help the healing process. This made it a lot more bearable. Collette then arranged to see me the next day again to see how we are getting along.

Since then Collette & breastfeeding support team have been nothing but amazing, staying in contact, being supportive and reassurance. I know for sure if it wasn’t for Collette and the breastfeeding support team I would of gave up breastfeeding as it was way too sore. I am now in a position to feed my little girl without much pain and also know what she is getting is nothing but the best to start in life.

Thank you Colette you truly are a star!

Dear Paula86,

Thank you so much for taking the time to provide some feedback on the breastfeeding support you have received. I am delighted to hear that the breastfeeding support team have been able to help you through some challenging times and that their call to you was timely and welcome.

I hope other new mums feel some reassurance from you sharing your experience and appreciate that help is at hand for these early breastfeeding challenges.

Well done to you too for persevering - you really are giving the very best start to your wee one.

I will be sure to pass on your comments to Collete and the rest of the team. I hope your breastfeeding journey is easier going forward, but if any other difficulties arise, be assured we are only a phone call away.

My very best wishes,

Gina
