"Injury not taken seriously"

About: Russells Hall Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I feel annoyed and slightly cheated by the service I received at Russells Hall yesterday, despite being in and out of A&E in just over an hour.

I fell down over the weekend and hurt my foot, when I woke up Sunday I couldn’t put any weight on it, so I elevated it and iced it but by Monday it had swollen completely and was purple from bruising on top and bottom of my foot, so my mother-in-law took me to Russells Hall.  I hopped from the car to the waiting room, then when I got called again and hopped through to the cubicle area, trying to keep up with the nurse who didn’t seem bothered that I couldn’t walk as I was in total agony with any kind of weight on my foot.

I was them sat on a bed where I was seen by another nurse who examined my foot and sent me to Xray that confirmed no break in bones the nurse then advised me to go home, elevate and ice then try putting trainers on and start walking on it.  I told the nurse the pain was unbearable and that surely if I have soft tissue  damage it would not be a good idea to start walking on 24 hours later? The nurse advised they don’t advise rest anymore but to carry on using the foot.

I have spoken to people who work in the NHS and they have said it’s not a good idea and that I should of been given crutches, even a boot or strapping till the swelling had gone down and I was able to put weight on my foot.

With the nurse giving me the feeling that I had wasted their time and that I couldn’t be in that much pain as it wasn’t broken.

I have researched online and found people still suffering with these issues months later, and most websites advise 2-4 weeks recovery, however between this and the NHS there seems to a lot of conflicting advice on what to do with this type of injury.

I feel like my injury wasn’t taken seriously and with my husband at work I’m left to try and get round the house unaided, I have to go up and down our stairs on my knees, I’m tired, in a lot of pain, struggling with mobility and feel so left down by the hospital.
