"If I wasn't there I don't know what would have happened"

About: Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Acute/Medical Receiving Unit (50,51,53) Glasgow Royal Infirmary / Medical HDU (Ward 52) Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

My son was admitted with expected tonsillitis/glandular fever. Took doctors 3 days in ward 51 to finally decide what was wrong with him. He was then moved to HDU to be treated for PIMS. Was advised that sick kids at Queen Elizabeth wouldn't take my son as he was 16. Docs and nurses had to go back and forth every day to sick kids to get help to treat my son as they had never dealt with PIMS before. Nearly a week went by and my son wasn’t getting any better. I had to keep pressing and pressing for them to move him to get the care he needed with experienced doctors.  Hospital told me I wasn't allowed to stay but I wasn't leaving my 16 year old son in their hands and if I wasn't there I don't know what would have happened to him.

He was then transferred to sick kids at queen Elizabeth to ICU. Within an hour of being there they had to remove his canular as it wasnt in properly and the medication had been spilling out into his arm and skin.  I did raise this at the HDU at royal infirmary as my sons arm was all swollen and sore and he also couldn't move or lift it. I was told it was probably just fluid!  My son had a big purple/red patch all over his arm which then blistered. He still doesn’t have all the feeling back in his arm now after being home 3 weeks.

My sons discharge papers from glasgow royal infirmary said he was being treated for sepsis.

When we arrived at Queen Elizabeth sick kids the difference in care is outstanding. They also advised that they had a bed waiting for my son for 2 days but the royal wouldn't transfer him over.

Dear Andrea26,

I am sorry to hear about the concerns you raise regarding your son’s care while under our care in the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and the apparent delays arranging transfer to the children’s hospital. This sounds like it was a frightening and frustrating time for you both. I am pleased to hear that you felt the care received at the Queen Elizabeth children’s hospital was outstanding and hope your son is recovering. I know my colleagues from the children’s hospital would welcome the opportunity to respond and share your experience through their teams.

From the perspective of you and your son’s experience at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, in order for us to investigate the issues you have raised regarding your his care with our services and provide you with a fuller response, it would be helpful if you would agree to contact me at the email or number below to give me his name and date of birth.

Thanks

John Carson

Dear Andrea26,

This sounds like an extraordinarily worrying time for you, your son and your family. The team here at RHC were very sorry to hear or your concerns, and we note it was particularly kind of you to take your time to highlight your praise of our team here at the Children’s Hospital.

I can share that our senior management team at the Children’s Hospital have taken this opportunity to pass on their thanks to our Intensive Care team for their support of your team, as well as ensuring they see a copy of your own comments.

We wish your son all the very best for his continuing recovery

Kind regards

Coral
