"Great communication and care"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Blossom Ward (Paediatrics)

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I recently arrived into the blossom unit as my newly born daughter wasn’t feeling too great.

The staff have been so lovely towards me and my daughter they are so gentle with her and very caring, they are always checking in on me to make sure I’m okay. The communication has been great with both doctors and nurses as I have been explained everything that has been happening and all questions that I have asked were answered very thoroughly which is great as sometimes I overthink all these types of things but they have all reassured me and kept me at ease the whole time.

The only thing that I can say that needed to be improved was when I first arrived and was brought into this room there was no bed only chairs and a cot, the only reason why I am bringing this up is because I have recently gave birth 2 weeks ago and having to sit in a chair was very uncomfortable and I needed something to lie down on. However once I informed the nurse of this she was extremely helpful and apologized about the situation, a bed was brought down immediately which I am very grateful for and now I am a lot more comfortable. Even if there are small mistakes the staff always fix or improve upon it and they actually seem grateful to be told this as it allows them to learn from it. I really can't say anything negative about them as they have been very good and always seem to be so hardworking. My experience so far on this unit has only been positive!

Dear Aoiyf36,

Congratulations on your baby daughter.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us and for drawing our attention to your needs. Sometimes we can only allocate rooms that are available at the time of admission and I am aware that a couple do not have a built in parent bed - we try to allocate these after all the others. I am so glad you let the staff know of your discomfort and that this was sorted for you. I hope your stay continues to be more comfortable.

We will take on board the learning for the future to ask the question and take into consideration the needs of Mums who have recently delivered a baby.

Many thanks for letting us know how we did and the staff will be please to read your lovely comments which will be shared with the team.

Wishing you both all the best

Kind Regards

Bernie

Dear Aoiyf36 - further to the response above we discussed the issue you raised with our colleagues in DHH and for post-delivery mothers we are now providing them with hospital beds and not using the pull out beds, when these mothers arrive on the ward during admission it is asked and assessed whether they require a hospital bed – this is now ongoing practice within the ward.

We thank you again for your feedback

Best wishes

Stephanie
