Mum had been in hospital for 29 weeks with delerium. This was resolved and plans were made to discharge her, however a few days before her discharge Mum tested positive for Covid in Ward 5 Falkirk Community Hospital. The discharge team still planned to discharge her and said that they would provide care but obviously we would not be able to see her, so in summary my Mum who is 85 and frail was to be sent home with carers who did not know her and to deal with this change herself! I complained and they decided to keep my Mum on ward and complete her 10 day isolation
On day 10 we had everything arranged for discharge however Mum's lateral flow came back positive. They phoned to say instead of my brother going to pick her up they would arrange hospital transport I asked to speak to the discharge team as I believed my Mum needed to have two negative lateral flow tests before being released, I spoke to someone in the discharge team who basically said as she had completed her 10 day isolation she would sent home and that they had to look at the bigger picture as they needed the beds. My mum was treated like a statistic and a bed rather than a human being her manner was awful.
Whilst I can appreciate that there are a lot of relatives waiting for beds my mum is my main focus.
We have decided that in Mum's interest we will need to bring her home and hope that our family and carers do not contract Covid
I will also send this message to my MSP to follow up
"Poor discharge experience"
