"My time in A and E"

About: Antrim Area Hospital / Accidents & Emergency

(as the patient),

I had to attend A and E in Antrim, I have gallstones and needed stronger pain relief.I also have depression, anxiety and M.E.I arrived about 8pm was seen quickly by a triage nurse who could only offer me pain relief I cant have or already had. I managed to get something stronger about 4am. My biggest problem was I was made to sit in the corridor on a uncomfortable chair from about 11pm until 4.30pm the next day in this time I wasn't asked once if I was ok, no one told me what was going on. I had nothing to eat or drink. When I tried to ask for help I was ignored while 2 Hca's made 1 phone call. I wasn't even offered a blanket. I have never ever felt like such a nobody or irrelevant in my life ever. I am still struggling with the way it made me feel. I was in complete agony and utterly humiliated.

Hello Ladycj75.

My name is Cathy McCoy. I am the Clinical Service Manager for ED in the Northern Trust.

Firstly, I would like to thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback about your recent experience whilst attending Antrim ED, and for highlighting the issues you encountered during this time.

I cannot apologise enough for the experience you have described. This does not meet the standards we strive to achieve within the Trust. I am sorry to hear that on this occasion you were made to feel irrelevant, humiliated and ignored.

The ED Department within Antrim Area Hospital has been under immense pressure, unfortunately on occasions resulting in long delays. Staff are under immense pressure. However, communication remains of the utmost importance and not being updated on your plan of care is unacceptable and I apologise.

There are a number of issues that you have raised and I would appreciate if you could make contact with myself directly to discuss these. Please email me on Cathy.McCoy@northerntrust.hscni.net if you feel you can.

In the meantime, I will ensure that your feedback is shared with the ED Team so that staff can reflect on their practice for learning and improvements.

Again, please accept my sincere apologies and I look forward to hearing from you.

Best Wishes,

Cathy
