"A wee window to my Covid Experience"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Intensive Care Unit

(as the patient),

I contracted Covid , and was in Ninewells for nine weeks, two of them being in a coma.  It was the most harrowing experience of my life . The hospital treatment by the doctors and nurses was amazing for the most part , especially in the Covid wards although I think a bit more patience and understanding of what a patient is going through with delirium,  hallucinations etc could be practised with the odd individual nurse.

Delirium was by far the worst as in mine I saw my whole family murdered in front of me and took a while to realise my brain went wonky.  anyway , besides that, I was taken out the Covid ward and put in another but I felt abandoned as they just dumped me in a side ward where I lay for three hours without acknowledgement from anyone that I was there . I couldn't move with the effects of Covid so it was horrible.  When a nurse eventually came she was mortified and so apologetic though not her fault.

I had asked to be taken to the shower and was put on a chair with gas bottle attached , I so needed this shower.  It was hard work especially as the gas bottle was empty.  I couldn't believe it ,thought I was dying , couldn't breath rang the alarm and was retrieved.  The last negative point was when I was taken to the toilet ,I was forgotten about for 45 mins.  I could hear the nurses talking.  I rang the bell as instructed when the nurse finally came she admitted to forgetting about me . Anyway small annoyances on a long journey .  The food was excellent , the doctors amazing , consultants out of this world .

And most of the nurses were god sent. They are  nothing short of angels.  The lengths they would go to to make you happy and their reassurances that they would not let anything happen to you , was so important as I thought and also accepted the fact I was dying ,every time they put a different .oxygen mask on me I cried like a baby.

And when they told me that they would have to put me to sleep and incubate , they also told me it may be the last and I may not survive.  I was busted the video call to my wife was and is the worst ever thing I ever had to do . After all that when I was put in the ward my rehab and general build up started.  The young physio nurses was out of this world if it wasn't for their encouragement and approval and patience I don't know where I would be . On the ward even the patients whom were there for other ailments were so encouraging on my progress , the negative points disappeared pretty quick here .

My time in Ninewells was harrowing but totally amazing at the same time . I owe them my life for which I will be eternally grateful.  And after care at my local doctor again fantastic, I got out of hospital , and got a real bad case of shingles , and then my Chron's disease flared up badly its been a nightmare. But there is progress and I am back to work three days a week . Quite hard on my legs ,and lungs too, sometimes out of breath . But I am alive . I think about all those nurses and doctors every single day and am embarrassed that I can't remember their names . I could go on and on but I won't,  so thanks to all for putting yourselves in such peril to save the likes of me xxxx .
