"A hospital emergency with my Nanny"

About: Northern Ireland Ambulance Service / Emergency ambulance response Royal Victoria Hospital / Accident & Emergency

(as a carer),

My Nanny fell ill in a local shopping centre  a fortnight ago. We thought it would pass, however she needed intervention so we rang for an ambulance. Shaun came within minutes to first assess her and was an absolute gentleman. He took so much care and time with my Nanny and ensured my Mum and I were OK. He then explained exactly what had happened to my Nanny. Her heart rate had slowed dangerously, and her blood pressure was too low. So, she had to be taken to the ED. He made the wait to get into ED easier with his kind manner and jokes he kept us safe and well. He ensured my nanny got the best care and she doesn't like hospitals at all so it was a welcome bonus. He joked with her about her favourite show and getting her home in time for Last of the Summer wine. He made a scared elderly lady feel completely safe and secure. Once in the ED majors ward, my Mum and I couldn't have asked for more from Martina and Fredrinka. They kept her in great spirits, helped her get well, all while amazing an extremely busy and overwhelmed ward. My mum and I were so grateful that they were there for us and my Nanny on that day. Thank you so very much! You took the fear out of a very scary time!

Dear GraceLeckey,

My name is Linsey Sheerin, I am the Service Manager for Urgent and Emergency Care at the Royal Victoria Hospital. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on Care Opinion. I am so sorry that you nanny had to wait to get into the ED, unfortunately this would have been due to there being no clinical space immediately available. Staff continue to work tirelessly to free up clinical space, during these challenging times.

I too am thankful that Shaun was there to ensured that your nanny felt safe and secure while she waited and it is heartening to read of the care and compassion shown by Martina and Fredricka. I will ensure that your experience is shared directly with them both.

I hope that your nanny is currently well and making progress in her recovery.

Best Wishes

Linsey

Update posted by GraceLeckey (a carer)

Gosh no! It was not at all a criticism. We are all in the midst of a pandemic and you and your staff are on the front line! It was respectful and you didn't feel you were an inconvenience and my nanny was treated with the upmost respect. When hospitals are mentioned now after the pandemic, you fear because of how overwhelmed they are and the wait was nothing at all. Please do let them know because they were so lovely and so helpful. They really took time with my Nanny who often has little patience and is so set in her ways and it really made all the difference. She felt she'd had a night in a hotel rather than a hospital! Thank you for everything!

Dear GraceLeckey

Thank you for your extremely kind and generous feedback. I am sure you, your mum and your Nanny were extremely frightened during this sudden and alarming illness.

It is great to hear that the Paramedic who arrived was able to assess the situation fully and quickly ensuring your Nanny had urgent clinical treatment. It is always reassuring during a traumatic incident to have the correct knowledge and skills present. It is heartwarming to hear how safe and secure you all felt with Shaun and how impressed you were with his treatment, care and personal touches. It is a skill in itself to be able to lighten the mood during a stressful situation and it sounds as if Shaun excelled.

I would very much like to share your glowing compliments with Shaun directly however to do this I would require a few extra details. If you would be prepared to discuss this further please contact me on amanda.sweetlove@nias.hscni.net

I hope your Nanny is feeling much better and back to enjoying watching her favourite Last of the Summer Wine.

Kind regards

Amanda

Dear GraceLeckey,

Please don't worry, I knew from the feedback that you left that you were in no way criticising any aspect of your nanny's care including the wait. Thank you for being so understanding of the challenges our staff face on a daily basis. Despite the wait not being any issue for you, your mum or your nanny, we never want any patient to have to wait to access our department and that is why I needed to apologise.

Again, thank you for your comments and support of the staff, it really means so much to staff to hear such lovely feedback.

Linsey
