"A few basics could have made this experience better"

About: Craigavon Area Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a carer),

My 87 year old mother was readmitted to ED on Wednesday by Acute Care at Home Team, was only home on Monday. Taken in by ambulance at 12 30 pm but had to sit in wheelchair to after 8 pm that night, then got cubicle and stayed to 5 pm next day.  Whilst we as a family acknowledge the stress of staff and winter pressures - few basis principles could have ensured that this experience was made better for my mum - she was so traumatised last night reflecting on her experience:

No idea why there and what was cause for delay

Cold

No pillow - someone made her up a pillow with blanket

Given tea and toast - toast was hard as rock and jam left but it was impossible to open and she even asked nurse for help who also found it difficult - could catering staff not as a matter of course ask elderly patients who would have difficulties with their hands/mobility - if they would like their jam/marmalade opened for them before they left.  How are elderly meant to eat hard toast with no dentures.

Mum did say all nursing staff were lovely. But please look at the basis for our elderly and treat them well.

Dear Maigp46 - thank you so much for providing this feedback.

We apologize for the delay in your mother being assessed. Unfortunately the emergency department has been regularly overcrowded this last few months. There are significant numbers of patients delayed in the ED waiting on admission beds.

This leaves us with limited cubicle space. It also means the nursing team have to care for the needs of patients with delayed admission as well as new attendees. The Hospital team are working hard to improve the flow of admissions out of the ED. The reason for the delay should have been explained to your mother.

I will speak to the ward sister to ensure we increase our requisition of pillows and blankets and I will ask ask her to remind staff who bring meals to patients that they should ascertain if the patient needs any assistance.

Best wishes

Paul Smyth

I apologies that your toast was not satisfactory. The Domestic Services manager will address this with the staff member and monitor to ensure an acceptable standard is maintained.

If a patient requires any assistance with their condiments or meals this is provided by nursing staff.
