"We feel let down and frustrated"

About: Victoria Hospital / Maternity care

(as a service user),

I had went for a private scan (8 weeks pregnant) to see how things were, on this visit we were told baby didn’t look to be growing. So I booked into my maternity ward for a scan for them to confirm what was happening.

Our first scan with the NHS was in October, they only offered an external scan, which showed the baby had stopped growing potentially, and that we would need to come back for a second scan to confirm this and next steps as 2 NHS scans are required before they legally do anything or confirm anything.

We had another external scan in early November (9 days after first one) and this looked the same as the previous one, which should confirm it’s a missed miscarriage.

They then did an internal one and seen something different, due to not having another internal one to go off she is having to see us again next week for this. This has been a whirlwind of emotions for us as we have prepared ourselves 2 times now to be told bad news and been left high and dry for another week. This is not allowing us to process or grieve the loss of our child the way we want to.

We feel let down and frustrated at the NHS for this, we should have been offered internal the first time and confirmed or confirmed with both external scans.

There seems to be no care around whether or not I would get an infection etc. as baby has obviously stopped developing from 5.5 weeks (I’m now 11) everything else remains to grow and I still feel very pregnant with the symptoms etc. which is playing a big part on my mental health. How can they leave us yet another week when we have waited over 14 days and had 2 separate scans to confirm a missed miscarriage.

Dear Kaits, thank you for contacting us to highlight your concerns. We are sorry that this is such a difficult time for you. It is difficult to answer the concerns you have highlighted via this forum as we do not have any information regarding you as an individual. If you have been attending Early Pregnancy Unit there is a number that you should have been given to contact should you have any concerns or questions. The same is true if you have been attending fetal medicine. You can also contact patient relations Dept via switchboard on 01592 643355 and the relevant manager for the area you are attending will be informed of your concerns. I hope this is of some help to you during this difficult time.

Update posted by Kaits (a service user)

I’m a healthy individual this was not a high risk pregnancy and this is our first pregnancy. We know we have had a missed miscarriage but it’s the fact the hospital will not confirm this and have messed us about for a month now trying to get scans etc. We should have been offered an internal one the first appointment and then this would have never happened as this would have been followed up on our second appointment. It does not take this long to confirm. 3 appointments to confirm a miscarriage? When both external scans are the same from different weeks. This is an ongoing matter from 23 October. Mental health is not taken into account when things are pushed back for days on end because the nhs has failed us and failed to offer a basic internal scan on first basis when we came in? So why is that?

X2 external scans and 1x internal scan and still won’t confirm this. It needs to be noticed that they have done wrong by not offering internal scan at first visit 21 days ago as I would have had next steps by now.
