"A huge Thank you & great 'Sips till Send' initiative"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Accident & Emergency Ninewells Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as a relative),

My mum fell in her garden on an evening in October and sustained a fractured neck of femur. She was admitted to Ninewells ED around 11pm, where she had excellent care from the medical & nursing teams.

She was moved to ward 9, trauma admissions in early hours of the morning. The staff who cared for her during her stay were excellent, caring and kind. She especially remembers a staff nurse called Ross who was on duty on the night shift. He was exceptionally thoughtful and kind, she wanted to mention how frightened she was and how much Ross reassured her, something which she will never forget. Although there were too many names to remember, all other staff on the ward - nursing and care, medical, AHP, students, housekeeping and domestic were friendly and professional too.

The clinical care was excellent - mum especially appreciated the 'Sips till Send' initiative, being able to keep her mouth comfortable right up to the point of theatre made such a difference to her. I have a nursing background, and am aware of the Hip Fracture Standards. In addition to the benefit of Sips till Send, I particularly appreciated that mum had her surgical procedure within 14 hours of her fall and that her early mobilisation has contributed to her progress to date.

We also wanted to mention how appreciative we are of the continued efforts of the hospital teams, despite the enduring difficult conditions arising from the pandemic situation.

As her nominated visitor, it was very helpful for me to be able to book my visit slot earlier in the day to allow me to travel to & from my home in East Lothian.

Also I want to mention a very kind young switchboard operator who so sensitively explained to me that my brother would not be able to go into ED to accompany mum, which saved him a fruitless late night journey.

Although a separate team, mum also wanted to thank the ambulance crews who took her to Ninewells and brought her home, who also were kind and highly professional.

Thank you from mum and our family.

Dear lionkh56,

Thank you for your feedback. The SipTilSend initiative is one which we are in the early stages of implementing, and our feedback on your mum's behalf will be used to help to continue to drive this forward. We are delighted that your mum felt the benefit of being able to sip fluids until she came to theatre.

I hope your mum is feeling much better, and that she has a smooth recovery from her surgery.

Best Wishes to you all,

Gillian Birrell
