"Mixed cardiology care"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Cardiology/Coronary Care Unit (Ward 18) University Hospital Wishaw / Cardiology (Ward 4)

(as a service user),

My father has had 2 heart attacks.  The first one he went the Monklands hospital, was getting no feedback at all regarding his care, never spoke with a doctor eventually I went down and sat the whole day nearly to eventually speak to a doctor even then the info received was very sparse.

The second attack he went to Wishaw General, omg it was night and day.  The doctor or nurse called every day with an update was very well informed.  He has just been took back in to Wishaw last night urinary problems, received a call from nurse and 1.30am advising what was wrong etc.  He then advised he was being sent to Monklands during the night my heart sank.

I called Monklands in the morning to ask if he’d been transferred, got a girl I asked if my father was in the ward who said yes he was there. I asked what was happening, has he seen a doctor, is he still bleeding -  and advised to call back later, I don’t know, I asked if I could speak to someone who does know, - asked to call back later… I don’t understand how two hospitals can be so different in the care and response to families who are very worried

Dear Jea657

Firstly, thank you for taking the time to share your experience on Care Opinion. I was very sorry to hear that your father has been admitted to hospital twice following a heart attack and that during his admission to University Hospital Monklands you were unhappy with the communication from the medical team. This is clearly not the standard of care and communication that we aspire to and I can only apologise for that. I was however pleased to hear that during his admission to University Hospital Wishaw the team provided daily updates and you felt well informed in relation to his medical condition.

It would be helpful if you could contact my colleagues in Patient Affairs, so that we can understand the issues you have shared, in more detail, to allow your feedback to be used with staff to review practice, so as to avoid this happening in the future.

You can contact them at PatientAffairs.Monklands@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk or Tel No: 01236 713065. Please quote care opinion reference 892217 in any communication.

I hope your father is now feeling better.

Kind regards.

Lesley
