"Lack of care from adult diabetic consultants"

About: Enhanced Care / Community Diabetes Services

(as the patient),

Adult Diabetes clinic - consultants seemed non existent in lock down.  Had to beg to be seen as I was having major problems with my control.  After many many phone calls I finally received a face to face appointment in dungannon.   Felt consultant totally dismissed my issues with regards to the struggles  I was having.

Now a year later my problem still exists with no hope of either a follow up phone call or a further appointment.   On the plus side the team of diabetic nurses have been very efficient and understanding of my problems and have helped me along the way.  If only the consultant was as attentive.

Dear Larril1711

Thank you for your feedback. During lockdown the hospital had to cancel all outpatient face to face clinics. This was for 2 reasons. One was to reduce footfall onto the hospital site where Covid 19 inpatients were being nursed - to ensure the safety of both patients and staff from a virus which was extremely contagious. The second reason was that the Diabetic Consultants had to be re-deployed to help on the Wards because of the number and clinical needs of the Covid 19 patients. This situation was not ideal however the decision was taken at Trust level and indeed similar process was undertaken in other hospitals in the Region.

I am sorry that you did not feel you received appropriate attention at your consultant appointment in Dungannon however thank you for your positive comments about the Diabetic Nursing team.

I wish you well

Louise Devlin
