"Poor care Ninewells A&E"

About: Ninewells Hospital / Accident & Emergency St Andrews Community Hospital / Minor Injuries Unit

(as a service user),

I attended A&E Ninewells with an ankle injury.

Eventually seen by a member of staff who was reluctant to x-ray, however there was a red flag of pain at lateral malleolus. X-ray confirmed avulsion fracture. The member of staff was very dismissive of the injury: no exercises given, no longer tubigrip and no moonboot. I was told the virtual fracture clinic would follow me up, but they have failed to refer me. MIU at St Andrews gave me the missing care (exercises, moonboot, advice and tubigrip). They called me today after I self referred myself yesterday. Thankfully I have done all I needed to and I feel it helps that I am a nurse. The staff member at Ninewells wrote very scant notes and said my trainers, limp and short tubigrip were suffice. The moonboot subsequently given was much safer (ankle support) and more comfortable to wear.

This time, I cannot say good care was given.

Dear Linsmoo.

Thanks you for taking the time to share your experience. I am sorry that it hasn't been a positive one from your Ninewells appointment. I am sure the team there will be in touch to discuss further.

I am delighted that your experience with the MIU staff at St Andrews was a more positive one and the appropriate treatment has now been given. I shall ensure this is shared with the team.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Karen

Dear Linsmoo

I am sorry to read your comments about your recent attendance at Ninewells Emergency Department. There are aspects of your feedback that I would like to look into further so we can learn and improve. I would be grateful if you would consider contacting patient relations by email: TAY.feedback@nhs.scot. We would then be able to review your ED clinical attendance and could provide a more detailed response.

Thank you for taking the time to feedback and on behalf of the department I would like to apologise again. I hope you are on the mend and your ankle is improving.

Update posted by Linsmoo (a service user)

Dr Andrew Kinnon

I will be more than happy to email the patient relations by e-mail.

The Fracture Clinic are also aware of the lack of care and I will check if they have brought this up.

Kind regards

Linsmoo
