"Administration of prescribed medication"

About: Stepping Hill Hospital / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

I was in severe pain. During my time in the department (around 10 hours) I was given one 30mg tablet of codeine. The doctor had prescribed paracetamol, codeine, metacloperamide and fluids. I asked many times for more pain relief and eventually felt I could administer my own pain relief at home more timely/with better effect. I was told not to eat/drink but fluids were not given for hours. They were disconnected for my visit to CT and there was a delay in being reconnected when I got back to ED. I eventually got IV paracetamol at the same time the Dr was giving me my take home meds. He told me to take 2 tablets x 4 times daily yet handed me copy prescription advising 1 tablet x 4 times daily. Maximum of 4 per 24 hours. So confusing.

As an aside, I was not Covid tested during my stay.

On a positive note, the doctor rang me the day after my attendance to inform me of worsening of existing spinal fracture seen on CT scan and has referred me for spinal review.

To improve I feel adequate pain relief administered in a timely manner should have been a priority

Covid testing for all patients is also a priority

Thanks
