"My wife's stroke : in A & E and stroke ward"

About: Dr Gray's Hospital / Emergency Medicine Dr Gray's Hospital / Stroke

(as a service user),

My wife is 74 and not in good health, I am 77 and we have been together for about 60yr.

The care she had in the stroke ward was 2nd to none. VVG.

However the A & E was something else . First I was told I could not sit in the waiting room with her. After a discussion I was allowed to stay with her.   When a doctor come through for her we asked if I could come with her, she said no. My wife was there for four hours in a cubicle herself, with visits from a nurse and doctor for 10/15min in total. As we were the same bubble I can't see the reason I could not have been with her.

Also she attends ARI at different departments where I am allowed to take her to the waiting room and sit with her in that department. As Dr Grays is part of NHS Grampian, I don't see the reason behind your rules. This rules cause distress to patient and carer.

I would like this rules to be changed as every other covid rules are retreating.

Regards to reader

Dear Careminded,

Thank you for sharing your recent experience at Dr Gray's. I'm delighted to hear that your wife was well cared for on our stoke ward and I'll be sure to feed this back to the ward team.

You are absolutely right to query our visiting rules in the Emergency Department and to highlight the differences you've encountered across departments in NHS Grampian. Our visiting guidance does allow visitors to accompany patients however we also need to apply some changes to this in certain areas due to the physical space restrictions and clinical activity that takes place which may increase the risk of infection.

Within our Emergency Department, the clinical team should assess these risks on a patient by patient basis before making a judgement about whether a relative can sit with the patient. Using your feedback we've review our approach to this to ensure we're not causing undue distress to patients and family/friends.

I'm sorry for the upset this situation caused and thank you again for getting in touch as feedback from families is so helpful to make sure we're doing everything we can to deliver the best possible care.

I hope your wife is continuing to recover well.

Kind regards,

Louise
