"Accident and Emergency decision that I should see GP"

About: Northwick Park Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as a service user),

I arrived at Accident and Emergency on Thursday  morning as I had severe pain in my foot and could hardly walk. The Triage nurse took my obs and without even seeing my foot made the decision that I should go to my GP due to them being so busy. I was told to wait whilst they contacted the GP. After a 45 minute wait and having watched various other patients coming in after me and then being called by doctors, I went back to Triage nurse and asked what was happening. They told me I wouldn’t be seen and a doctor would call me.

I left and called my GP and they contacted Mount Vernon minor injuries and arranged an X-ray for the following day. The results showed I have ligament damage and am being referred for treatment for this.

I don’t  understand how your nurse can assess my injury through a desk without even seeing my foot and make the decision I didn’t need treatment on something they hadn’t even seen!!

Dear yanke,

Thank you for your review and I am very sorry to read of your experience.

Patients in the Urgent Care Centre and the Emergency Department are treated according to their clinical priority and I appreciate this is not always clear to patients in terms of communication and physical presentation.

As we cannot identify you from your post, please do contact our PALS team on 0208 869 5118 or LNWH-tr.PALS@nhs.net if you would like us to follow up on your behalf.

I do hope your foot is less painful and wish you a speedy recovery.

Best Wishes,

Leanne Fernandes - Patient Experience and Engagement Lead
